Southdown rams with superior hindquarters

What We Do

At Three Oaks we produce 'easy doing' sheep with the ability to produce and perform on grass - a vital economic trait.
Three Oaks and Cambridge Southdown studs are a stud stock and prime lamb sire producing enterprise. We use our Southdown rams with our commercial flocks and sell about 80 rams each year privately.

We produce rams with a strong commercial focus. With the use of Genemarker technology for cold tolerance and diligent performance recording, we can assure that our very best has been done to produce quality sires for domestic lamb production.

Three Oaks Southdowns

Our History

We started as a commercial prime lamb operation and registered the Three Oaks Southdown stud in 2012 as the demand grew for our Southdown rams. In the early days we used our stud sires over commercial ewes to trace lambs from birth to plate. This allowed us to determine the superior sires for ease of lambing, survival, growth, finish, meat yield and intramuscular marbling.

In 2017 we added the Cambridge stud to our operation. The Cambridge flock was founded in Tasmania in 1870 with Southdowns from the Cressy flock which were imported from Britain. It is the oldest Southdown stud still running in Australia.

In 2020 we were fortunate enough to purchase the neighbours' property which allowed us to expand our stud operation and run an additional 800 commercial ewes.

Along with our Southdown stud ewes, we are currently running 1700 commercial ewes, comprising 900 Nudie and Nudie-cross ewes, with half run in a self-replacing flock, and the remainder joined to Southdown rams, alongside 600 Coopworth ewes also mated to our Southdown rams. Lamb marking rates during the past seven years have consistently averaged between 150% and 160%.
